Malta Secretary of Economic Growth Dr José Herrera stated that the Maltese Government were committed to working with the online gambling operators in order to reduce the impact of European legislation affecting sector growth.
Speaking at an economic seminar in preparation for the Malta Igaming Summit, Dr Herrera commented that changes to European legislation were inevitable and would provide a set of new challenges to Malta’s licensed igaming operators.
“We are ready to work hand in hand with operators to reduce, as much as we can, the impact that such legislation can have. Malta is proud of the regulations it provides to the sector, through which consumers are protected,” Dr Herrera said
Dr Herrera commented that Malta governance should aim to protect and represent the interests and concerns of the igaming industry at an international level. Dr Herrera pointed that the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Authority had been building its ties with its UK counterpart.
Malta’s Economic secretary expressed concern regarding some EU states policies regarding online gambling.
“In our opinion, such steps may not only go against the principal guarantees of the EU treaties but could also lead to a further fragmentation of the sector, to the detriment of consumers,”
