UKGC issues warning over online scratchcard scheme

The UK Gambling Commission () has issued a to players of online scratchcard games about a new money-making scheme that could result in them promoting an illegal lottery.

The national regulatory body said that it has recently been alerted to plans for a system under which customers will pay a monthly fee in return for digital .

Those that sign up are also told they will receive more scratchcards in return for encouraging others to take part.

However, the UKGC has warned that by encouraging others to play, customers may commit the offence of promoting an illegal lottery, which could lead to a penalty of up to 51 weeks in jail and a fine.

In order to promote a lottery in Britain, an individual or company must acquire either a UKGC gambling licence or be registered with a local licensing authority.

Nick Tofiluk, director of regulation at the UKGC, said: “The law is quite clear on this matter – you cannot promote a lottery for private or commercial gain.

“We would advise anyone thinking about taking part in any scheme that involves purchasing, or encouraging others to purchase, online scratchcards to think very carefully before promoting an illegal lottery to others.”
