Operators Grumble about Excessive Regulation of the Gambling Business in France

It was a sign of relief for casinos when the French government decided to liberalize the
online gambling business. For the first time ever, foreign competitors were to be allowed into
the gambling market. However, it was not too long after that gambling business operators in
the country started referring to the liberalization as a Trojan horse. The French government
was accused of high-handed and iron-fisted regulation of the market. The major headaches of
the operators revolved around their revenue generation. They registered their displeasure over
the astronomically high taxes and the unbearably restricted payout limits. To operate online
gambling in the country, tax rates can be as high as 40% while the maximum that can be paid
to winners is pegged at 85%. It is only natural therefore that players will migrate to places
where the pasture is greener. But, the French government has insisted that the measures were
in the best interest of the economy.
