Which Football club do you support?

Being an Aussie I’m more neutral than most, but on my last trip to London I ventured down to Selhurst Park to watch Crystal Palace vs Watford and had an amazing time, so (despite the result) I am adopting Crystal palace, especially with Mile Jedinak as captain.

How do you judge their season so far?

I’ll go straight to the data to answer this one. Interestingly, they have performed better as an underdog than a favourite, and also performed better in earlier games than late games. Consistent with the poor performance as a favourite they have only secured 14 points from home games (compared to 18 from away games), the 3rd worst in the league.

Put simply, they have to be better at home and manage expectation better. They have also performed poorly against the Asian Handicap in home games as well. Hopefully I’ll get out to a few more games at Selhurst Park to try and support a turnaround!

How does your role with iSport Genius involve you in both Betting and Football?

Being a co-founder and chief maths geek at iSport Genius, I am always looking to derive the most interesting insights about Football through big data analysis, and at the moment our focus is linking these insights to betting markets. Different things excite different people, but some of the patterns we have noticed in data relating to key betting markets have been pretty awesome!

Why did you want to speak at Betting on Football 2016?

The opportunity to speak about something which I am really passionate about and further raise the profile of some of the really cool things iSport Genius is doing, particularly to such a high quality and relevant audience, was extremely appealing.

What will you be discussing on your panel session?

The session title is a really interesting one, “Trading Places – how has the increasing availability of data affected trading patterns?” I think there is great scope in this session to discuss how big data is driving the future of sports betting, both in terms of the trading perspective as well as the impact this will have on the end consumer.

What are you most excited about ahead of the conference?

Talking data (since when did being a maths nerd become cool?) to new industry contacts in the inner sanctum of the Emirates is pretty damn exciting!
