Artificial Intelligence developer Professor Louis Rosenburg has sent a shockwave through the US betting industry by creating an algorithm that correctly predicted the first to fourth places at this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Employing predictions formed by human-based artificial intelligence engine UNU, Rosenburg would take down the ‘holygrail’ of betting as his four-fold bet would win $10,842 pay-out on a $20 bet priced at 540-1.

The UNU engine, utilises a form of AI called Swarm Intelligence which aims to amplify human intelligence by assessing reaction to multiple choices.

Prior to the Kentucky Derby UNU had collected data samples from participants’ asked to predict the race winner. UNU used the data to tap into the collective knowledge and group intuition on the participants and its choices.

Unlike traditional research polls, which serve to divide a group opinion, UNU seeks to find the correct answer through collective compromise

In February of this year UNU had correctly predicted 11 of 15 2016 Oscar winners for US news source Newsweek, outperforming film critics and professional gamblers.

Professor Louis Rosenburg who is the CEO and Founder Unanimous AI, a technology company that aims to harness group/collective intelligence, now aims to extend the technology beyond gambling into sectors such as health care and politics.

“Forcing polarized groups into a swarm allows them to find the answer that most people are satisfied with. Our vision is to enable the power of group intelligence for everybody.” Rosenburg told Newsweek
