Turner Broadcasting expands digital presence with new Champions League streaming service

US media owner Turner Broadcasting has announced that it will launch a new ‘standalone sports streaming service’ for US consumers in 2018.

The Media group which operates CNN, TNT, TCM plus US sports channels NBA TV, Turner Sports and Nascar TV has recently agreed a $60 million content deal with UEFA for the rights to broadcast Champions League matches, beginning season 2018/19.

Seeking to push its sports content to a younger ‘millennial’ audience, Turner will launch its digital streaming service promoting exclusive UEFA Champions League matches, which will only be broadcast via its digital services.

Turner has yet to reveal the official name and monthly subscription price for its streaming service, however, executives have detailed that further sports content will be added for sports fans.

Speaking to US media, David Levy President of Turner Broadcasting stated that his firm is focused on expanding ‘beyond the traditional TV ecosystem’ and prioritising ‘OTT products and services’.

Turner becomes the latest US media owner to commit to a digital streaming service. This month Disney Co owner of US sports broadcaster ESPN confirmed that it was investing in a sports-themed streaming vertical.
