A crucial EU summit kicks off today, with the UK government and 27 heads of EU member states’ seeking to make progress on the ‘Brexit agenda’, as the Conservative government aims to meet its target ‘March 2019 exit deadline’.
Desperate to start negotiations on trade matters, tonight PM Theresa May will address EU peers on Britain’s exit strategy at a dinner in Brussels.
Ravaged by the UK media two-weeks ago for her ‘disastrous’ Tory Party Conference closing speech, PM May appears to have made ‘a breakthrough’ on Brexit discussions this week, following a ‘working dinner’ with EU Chief Commissioner Jean-Claude Juncker, in which parties’ are reported to have agreed to ‘accelerate negotiations’.
Revising its Brexit markets, Paddy Power currently prices ‘evens’ that no Brexit agreement will be reached by the 2019 deadline, having previously made that eventuality odds-on at 5/6.
Further good news for May, sees the bookmaker increase her chances of negotiating Brexit as PM, cutting May’s Tory Party leadership price from 9/4 to 2/1. Nevertheless, Paddy Power still holds odds-on 4/11 that two or more different Prime Ministers will be involved in the negotiations.
A strong showing by May in the EU Summit will be needed to ensure her survival as Party Leader.
Though, relationships are thought to have improved, talks still remain at stage one, with the UK and EU still to agree on the basic outline of an exit deal, on key negotiations relating to Northern Ireland’s borders, EU and UK citizens rights and just how big a divorce bill the UK will be forced to pay.
