Prime sponsors of the Scottish Premier League Ladbrokes, have apologised after Aberdeen complained to the SPFL about a tweet posted by the betting operator, during the Don’s 2-1 defeat to Rangers.
The tweet read “GOOOOOOALLLLL! Danny Wilson puts Rangers ahead!
“Fantastic news for Derek McInnes.”
Referencing the heavy speculation surrounding the future of Don’s manager and former Ranger’s player Derek McInnes, who has been heavily linked with the Ranger’s job since the Gers dismissed former manager Pedro Caixinha.
A Ladbrokes statement said: “We apologise for any offence caused. The tweet was intended to be a harmless joke, but we understand why it may have caused offence and it has now been deleted.”
In spite of reports suggesting that Aberdeen would demand £800,000 for Rangers just to speak to McInnes, the former Ranger’s player remains a clear 1/6 favourite to take over at Ibrox.
Rangers and Aberdeen both currently are both on 30 points, seven behind title favourites and reigning champions Celtic. In the aftermath of Aberdeen’s second defeat to Rangers in a week, McInnes stated: “It just feels as if it has dragged on and dragged on. I’m not happy with how things have been played out. It has not been great the way it has been handled.”
For Ladbrokes, the incident marks the operator’s second twitter gaffe in a short space of time, after it apologised to Burnley for a tweet posting a middle finger emoji at former Leeds players Chris Wood and Charlie Taylor when Leeds defeated Burnley in the Carabao Cup, the tweet came just months after Ladbrokes had been unveiled as Burnley’s official betting partner.
In a statement released after that tie, Ladbrokes said: “These were very poorly conceived tweets which we have since deleted. It was only intended to be a bit of fun but failed completely in that regard, and we have apologised to Burnley FC and would like to sincerely apologise to any fans of the club that took offence.”Derek
