DSWV welcomes anti-match fixing bill in Germany

A bill was recently submitted to the federal government with the aim of amending the current law so that it penalises match-fixing more adequately. The German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) has welcomed this move.

DSWV President Mathias Dahms said: “Match-fixing is a crime. If criminal groups affect games, then it’s economically damaging as well as from an integrity point of view. This is a very serious problem that threatens the trust in the sport. “

The federal government in Germany has also committed to setting up a national platform to share information and allow both betting operators and the authorities to work together to tackle match-fixing in sport.

Dahms commented: “For some time now licensed sports betting providers in Europe have been trying to establish an effective prevention and detection system against match fixing in Germany. The legal uncertainty in the field of sports betting regulation makes these efforts extremely difficult. We now have discussions with the sport, and we are making positive steps despite these hurdles.”

The DSWV has been active in its attempts to drive out match-fixing, and organised a ‘Fight Against Match Fixing’ conference a few months back during which experts in sports, politics and sporting integrity discussed the issues and how best to tackle the issue.

The DSWV association was founded in 2014 by the leading German and European sports betting providers in Berlin.
