In a surprising development, Ontario Lottery and Gaming has picked a new operator to operate Niagara Falls’ two casinos. The authority selected Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, a Connecticut-based company that has seven casinos in the USA and one in South Korea, to run the two casinos – overlooking the bids placed by Las Vegas biggies like Caesars Entertainment Corp. or Hard Rock Café International.

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, owns Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, which employs close to 10,000 workers and has assets in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Atlantic City, N.J., Washington State, Louisiana and Incheon, South Korea.

Perhaps most important to Niagara Falls residents, the approximately 4,200 full- and part-time jobs at Niagara Fallsview Casino and Casino Niagara are protected for at least 12 months after Mohegan takes control.

“We’re allowing for (Mohegan) to have a transition, the company will look at what its plans are – whether it plans to expand or whatever – it will allow them that time to talk to the employees” and learn more about the operation, said OLG spokesman Tony Bitonti.
