Following an investigation into a potential breach of betting regulations, Everton’s Yerry Mina has been charged with misconduct by the FA.
The centre-back is alleged to have breached betting regulations after featuring in an advert for Colombian online bookmaker ‘Betjuego’ earlier this year.
An FA statement confirmed the defender allegedly breached Rule E8 (3) which states:
“An individual Participant, when acting in a personal capacity,shall not be permitted to advertise or promote any betting activity that the Participant is prohibited from engaging in by Rule E8(1) or E8(2).”
Players are subject to Rule E8(1), which prohibits any form of betting on any match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world, with rule E8(2) applying to match officials.
The recent crack down on breaches follows on from the case of Daniel Sturridge, in which the former Liverpool FC striker was found guilty of breaching betting regulations. The now free-agent was fined £75,000 and given a six-week suspension which the FA are now appealing in an attempt to get the suspension extended.
It is believed that the advert in question was removed as soon as Mina realised he might be in breach of the rules.
With this being said, Mina has until Friday to respond before his case is heard by an independent regulatory commission, who are set to have the final say on the sanctions he will face.
