Veikkaus appoints 13 new supervisory board members

Finnish gambling monopoly Veikkaus has strengthened its supervisory board after making a dozen of new appointments in a bid to elevate its responsible gambling standards.

The supervisory board is due to be led by chair Jukka Gustafsson and vice chair Jani Mäkelä, and will oversee the company’s corporate governance strategy and the implementation of responsible gambling policies.

“[These measures] will make it possible to build a holistic ecosystem for safer gambling, and create more opportunity to prevent money laundering offences,” chief executive Olli Sarekoski explained.

Among the 13 new members are a number of parliamentarians as well as Ilmari Nalbantoglu of the Finnish Olympic Committee.

The board will consist of 28 members, including 13 representatives of the country’s political parties, 13 representatives of Veikkaus’ stakeholders and two representatives of its employees.

As well as overseeing corporate governance, the supervisory board will ensure the submission of an opinion on Veikkaus’ financial statements and auditor’s report to the general meeting. This will be submitted to the Prime Minister’s office in the form of a report, outlining the development of gambling activities and activities related to the prevention of gambling.

Earlier this year, Veikkaus confirmed the appointment of Regina Sippel as new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), who has been tasked with leading the financial management, planning and risk management of an enlarged Veikkaus group. It comes as the Finnish government and health stakeholders pressure the state monopoly to improve its social responsibility standards.
