Restructuring its leadership frameworks, the Belgian Gambling Commission (BGC) has confirmed the appointment of Magali Clavie as new President.
A former Brussels High Court Judge specialising in adjudicating criminal convictions, Clavie takes charge of the BGC having previously served as President of Belgium’s Supreme Council of Justice.
Updating stakeholders, the BGC underlined that it has secured one of Belgium’s top civil servants to lead its organisation, which seeks to expand its remit and oversight governing Belgium gambling.
As new President, Clavie will be tasked with developing the BGC’s ‘Commission 2.0’ mandate seeking to develop new safer gambling measures and consumer protections.
Further duties will likely see Clavie tasked with reforming Belgian advertising codes related to betting sponsorships, following disputes between Jupiler League Clubs and the BGC in relation to partnership terms.
Clavie takes charge of the BGC following a turbulent period for Belgium gambling’s regulatory authority.
Last February, following an ‘internal complaint’ Belgium’s Centre of Integrity (CINT) was forced to investigate the BGC’s executive team in relation to ‘ethics violations’.
The CINT confirmed that it had placed BGC Acting Director-General Peter Naessens and further executives under investigation in relation to misuse of government funds, abuse of authority and accepting gifts from Belgian-licensed operators.
