DOGE’s wild ride continues after Elon Musk’s historical SNL appearance

What a wild ride it has been this weekend for Dogecoin. After a week of ‘foreplay’ and DOGE’s price rising to a new all time high of, it was finally time for Elon Musk’s appearance on Saturday night Live. While the ‘Dogefather’ referred to Dogecoin as a “hustle”, he also said it is the “future of currency” and announced that SpaceX will launch a DOGE-1 mission to the moon.

It might not have been a surprise for many that DOGE did not pump during the show The meme-based currency did already skyrocket in the run-up. In fact, upon airing, its price dropped to as low as $0.43 after bouncing back slightly. It is currently traded at $0.54.

Elon Musk mentioned cryptocurrency and dogecoin several times on Saturday.

A first was in his monologue when his mother, Maye, joined him. “I’m excited for my Mother’s Day gift. I just hope it’s not dogecoin,” she told her son. To which Musk replied: “It is. It sure is.”

Lloyd Ostertag

Later on, during SNL’s satirical Weekend Update segment, Musk made an appearance as financial expert called “Lloyd Ostertag.” He immediately said “Call me the Dogefather,” a name he previously dubbed himself on Twitter.

In his role as Lloyd Ostertag, responding to the question “What are cryptocurrencies?” Musk said:

“They are a type of digital money. But, instead of being controlled by a central government, they are decentralized using blockchain technology … And lately, prices have been soaring for cryptos like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and especially Dogecoin.”

“About as real as that dollar.”

Next, he explained what Dogecoin actually is:

“Well, it actually started as a joke based on an internet meme, but it’s taken off in a very real way … It was created in 2013, and has a circulating supply of 117 billion coins, of which 113 billion have already been mined.”

Musk’s most notable remark perhaps, came when the Weekend Update anchor took out a dollar bill from his pocket and said to Musk/Ostertag: “This is a dollar and it’s real,” to which Musk hesitated. “Sort of,” he said Adding that Dogecoin is “about as real as that dollar.” This confirmed what many Bitcoin analysts already “knew”.

Musk ended the segment responding to the anchor’s conclusion “Oh, it’s a hustle.” As he laughingly confirmed:

“Yeah, it’s a hustle.”

Musk seemed to have had a great time during Saturday Night Live appearing in numerous sketches. The one he liked most himself was where he impersonated “Wario” who was on trial for the alleged murder of “Super Mario”.
