Block Announces It Is Developing an Open-Source Bitcoin Mining System

Payments firm Block, recently rebranded from Square and known from its platform Cash App, announced to further continue its plans of building an open-source Bitcoin mining system.

Thomas Templeton, General Manager at Block, shared the news on Twitter explaining that the company “wants to make mining more distributed and efficient in every way, from buying, to set up, to maintenance, to mining.”

The tweet also revealed that Block is looking to make new ASIC mining computers and is evaluating various IP blocks, open-source miner firmware, and other system software options.

Block CEO Jack Dorsey hinted on its mining system back in October of last year and since then the company has started building a core engineering team to realize its ambitions.

Jack Dorsey has come out as Bitcoin‘s guardian, a man on a mission and just one mission. Bitcoin is the only thing that matters, Dorsey has often said. This Wednesday, thirteen years after the first Bitcoin transaction was made, he wrote an open letter to the cryptocurrency’s developers community, announcing the start of a Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, to protect the Bitcoin network from harm.
