Is eBay Adding Cryptocurrencies for Payments Soon? CEO Jamie Iannone Speaks

In a recent interview with The Street, published on February 27, president and Chief Executive Officer of eBay, Jamie Iannone, discussed the possible integration of cryptocurrencies on its platform and the sales of NFTs.

eBay has allowed NFT sales since May of 2021 of which CEO Jamie Iannone said that this simply emerged without much thought:

“We did change our policies last year so that you could trade NFT on the platform and essentially, you know, eBay is a place where people have something to sell and people have something by show up.”

“Even without announcing anything or doing anything, people started trading NFTs on the platform. It reminded me of many years ago when people just started selling cars when we didn’t even have a vehicle business at that point. So we’re seeing the same type of thing.”

While Iannone said that eBay is currently not accepting cryptocurrencies for payment on the platform, he did confirm that with a focus on youth and emerging trends, his firm is always “evaluating other forms of payments that we should take on the platform.”

The CEO then hinted at some exciting new developments stating:

“On March 10, we’re going to go deeper on all of these things, payments, advertising, our focus categories.”

Iannone added:

“eBay will be the place where people trade goods, whether they be physical or digital. So over time, you know, we want this to be the marketplace for sustainability.”

Eight years ago, the auction site allowed users to sell cryptocurrencies albeit externally. Its main US site included a category for ‘Virtual Currency’, where it listed many Bitcoin and altcoin-related activities like shares in mining operations.
