Coinbase Releases its Long Anticipated NFT Marketplace in Beta

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase (COIN) has launched its its long-awaited non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace on Wednesday in beta version.

A small group of users from a 3 million large waiting list can now start testing the platform, which was first announced in October of last year.

Coinbase’ new platform supports Ethereum-based NFT trading and includes a social-media spin to set itself apart from competition. Users can showcase their personal profile and follow others’ accounts in a “For You” feed, which is similar to social-media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Users can also “like” and comment on posts.

Coinbase’s vice president of product, Sanchan Saxena, said during the press briefing on Tuesday:

“This product is more than just buying and selling, it is about building your community.

It is about making sure that you can connect and engage with them on the platform. One other thing I mentioned in the beginning was that it’s a very social marketplace.”

The NFT market will support “all sorts of self-custody wallets” including the official Coinbase Wallet, thereby creating “an open NFT environment for everyone,” Coinbase said.

The marketplace will  also support fiat purchases with credit card and will charge zero transaction fees at the start, which however will gradually be changed to a “low, single-digit fee,” the Coinbase vice president of product said.
