“Use Crypto, Not Only Invest in it,” Edward Snowden Says

In a virtual appearance at the Consensus 2022 conference in Austin, famous whistleblower Edward Snowden said the value of crypto is in their use rather than investment.

Snowden, also president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, said:

“I use bitcoin to use it. In 2013, Bitcoin is what I used to pay for the servers pseudonymously.”

He added:

“Generally, I don’t encourage people to put their money in cryptocurrencies as a technology, and this is what distances me from a lot of people in the community.”

Snowden also voiced his support for the crypto industry and responded to a recent letter to U.S. lawmakers by a group of tech experts, in their fight against the industry’s lobbying efforts.

The letter which brings up the usual debunked claims against crypto, Snowden said, was a deliberate attempt at spreading misinformation with the signatories not putting in any effort to ‘understand’ cryptocurrencies:

“The letter is an argument for the status quo. There are so many ways to address all of their concerns. All the people who have signed this latter could understand this industry. They certainly should.”

The whistleblower who in 2013 leaked classified information on the National Security Agency’s surveillance of U.S. citizens, thereby significantly impacting people’s privacy, then discussed the current state of the internet. While there has been great progress on data encryption, metadata is still a concern, according to Snowden. He said:

“Think of it like a van with dark windows driving down the highway. You can’t see who the passengers are, but you can still see where the van left from, where it ended up, how long it took – that type of thing.”

He continued:

“We need to make sure no one can observe that level. We need to make more transactions similar, so everyone is driving the same kind of vans and gets lost in the crowd.”
