Telegram Considering Auction Marketplace for Wallet Addresses

Founder Pavel Durov said on Monday that his messaging platform Telegram has developed a marketplace to auction addresses and might be on the verge of launching it.

In a message on the app, Durov cited The Open Network, a protocol he developed alongside Telegram, where there had been an auction of wallet domain names previously.

Following regulatory concerns from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the project was abandoned. However Durov said that Telegram could be including certain elements of Web3 by auctioning off “@ usernames, group and channel links.”

Durov detailed on Telegram:

“This would create a new platform where username holders could transfer them to interested parties in protected deals – with ownership secured on the blockchain via NFT-like smart-contracts.”

The price of TON, native token behind The Open Network, immediately spiked and is currently trading at $1.33, up 15.33% in the last 24 hours according to CoinMarketCap.
