Nigeria Can Become World Leading Crypto Economy, VP Osinbajo Says

Yemi Osinbajo, the vice president of Nigeria, recently asserted that his nation had sufficient human capital to make it a global leader in the digital economy. However, the vice president said that for this to happen, Nigeria must adopt the proper strategy and policies.

Osinbajo reportedly made the comments while speaking to attendees of the Nigeria Digital Economy Summit (NDES), which was held in Abuja. The Nigerian president also discussed why his nation is better off today than it was more than three decades ago, at the time the first incarnation of the internet was created, in the same address.

Vice president Osinbajo said:

“A whole new world is unfolding before our very eyes, unlike Web 1 and 2 where we were relatively disadvantaged. In 1989, we didn’t have mobile phones, so we could not take advantage of the reach and depth that mobile telecoms gave digital innovation and financial inclusion. We are now better positioned to be significant players in Web 3.”

Osinbajo also explained that Nigeria has “already shown” its capabilities as shown by the “6 unicorns [we have] and many more on the way.” Nevertheless Nigeria will still have to “spend time on the development of digital skills,” Osinbajo said.

In September, the West African country with a population of over 200 million, announced that is planning to create a virtual free zone similar to Dubai. A press release stated that The Nigerian Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) is partnering with crypto exchange Binance to create the free zone, focused on blockchain and the digital economy in the country.
